Lochside

The inspiration for Lochside came from one simple frustration.

Every time I wore a traditional triangular shawl outdoors, the long ends always seemed to end up underneath me, trailing through wet grass or getting caught on whatever I was sitting on. I thought surely there had to be a better shape.

So I designed one!

Lochside is a half-hexagon shawl that sits comfortably around your shoulders while keeping the sides shorter and much more manageable. It still gives you all the warmth and comfort of a shawl, just without quite so much fabric getting in the way.

The pattern uses simple double crochet and chain stitches to create alternating solid and mesh sections, giving the shawl a lovely drape while keeping it light enough to wear throughout the year.

​

It's a really relaxing crochet project, with a simple four-row repeat once you've completed the first few rows.

The pattern includes written instructions with step-by-step photographs and is available as two separate PDFs - one using US crochet terms and one using UK crochet terms.

You can use any weight yarn and corresponding hook you like for this pattern. My sample was made using Yarnsmiths Merino DK Heathers in Dappled Fern, but I think it would look lovely in a semi-solid, tonal or gentle variegated yarn too.

As with all shawls, simply keep repeating the pattern until it reaches your preferred size.
